Record Increase in Ticks in Oklahoma – What Should You Do?

Are you in Oklahoma and feel like you are seeing more ticks than ever this year? You aren’t seeing things. This is one of the worst years ever for ticks!

Increase in Tick Population in Oklahoma

The mild winter followed by a wet spring has made our yards in the Oklahoma City area a breeding ground for ticks this year. According to News9, Oklahoma ranks as one of the highest states for tick-related diseases, with more than 2,000 tick-related disease cases since 2012. This year will likely rank as one of the worst years yet.

Why Ticks Are Dangerous for People

If you grew up in Oklahoma or the surrounding area, you’ve almost certainly had a tick on you at some point. Because of this, sometimes people do not treat a tick infestation with the kind of caution they should. Many diseases, such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme Disease, and tularemia, are spread by ticks. In addition, some people can have an allergic reaction to a tick bite.

If you or someone in your household have been bitten by a tick, don’t wait – call your physician or a medical professional as soon as possible.

Why Ticks Are Dangerous for Pets

For some of the same reasons, ticks are dangerous for your pets. Dogs can get Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, and many of the same diseases that people in Oklahoma get from ticks. Ticks have also been known in some cases to cause temporary paralysis in animals.

Same as above – if your pet has been bitten by a tick, contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.

How To Get Rid of Ticks

As mentioned above, if you have ticks and you, your family, or a pet, has been bitten, call a vet or doctor first. Once you or your pet are in the clear, you can start working to prevent ticks. First, make sure you keep your grass cut and shrubs trimmed. Ticks love tall grass. Also, clean up leaf piles and other cover near your home. Ticks love to hide in these areas.
